History

Known as white monks because of their light robes, the Cistercians are a Catholic order, which has been famous since the 11th century because of its virtue of work. One area in which this is clearly evident is brewing beer in cloisters. Renowned near and far, the “strict” Cistercians or Trappists are a major reason why Belgium, which is half the size of Latvia, is famous all over the world because of its beers. Indeed it was the beer brewed in the white monks’ cloisters that inspired Kokmuiža to create its own version of this Belgian style blond ale.
